The Seiko Speedtimer is more than just a chronograph: it is a symbol of precision, technology and sporting passion. Born in 1969 as one of the world's first automatic chronographs with a vertical clutch and column wheel , it represented a revolution in mechanical watchmaking. That same year, the Datsun 240Z conquered the roads and racetracks, paving the way for success in international rallying—including the legendary victory in the 1971 East African Safari Rally , with Seiko as its official sponsor. It is from this shared spirit of speed and reliability that the new Prospex Speedtimer Mechanical Chronograph SRQ055 is born, a direct heir to a legacy that continues to run through time.
Alongside the limited-edition versions inspired by the Datsun (SPB517, SRQ057 and SSC957), the SRQ055 is presented as a regular production model, designed for those who want a sports watch with a classic soul but a contemporary design. Its lines echo the robust traits of the SRQ051 and SRQ053 , but with a new visual harmony and more balanced proportions. The 42 mm steel case , 14.6 mm thick and water-resistant to 100 meters , is topped by a domed sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective treatment , guaranteeing impeccable visibility.
One of the most notable innovations is the tachometric scale : moved to a fixed external bezel , it frees up space on the dial, improving readability and giving the design a cleaner, more technical look. The black dial maintains the classic layout with three counters: 30-minute at 9 o'clock, 12-hour at 6 o'clock and small seconds at 3 o'clock. The applied indexes , precise printing and LumiBrite treatment on the hands and markers make every detail clear even in the dark.
Under the hood—or rather, under the dial—beats the mechanical heart of the 8R48 caliber , an automatic movement entirely developed by Seiko. With 28,800 vibrations per hour and a 45-hour power reserve , it uses the winning combination of a vertical clutch and a column wheel , the same technical solutions that made the 1969 model great. The components made with MEMS technology ensure greater precision, efficiency and durability over time.
The new, redesigned steel bracelet , with sharper and more comfortable links, and the three-fold clasp with safety push buttons complete the look. A detail that combines elegance and functionality, consistent with the brand's philosophy.
With the Prospex Speedtimer SRQ055 , Seiko does not simply recall its history: it renews it with character, combining Japanese heritage , racing spirit and precision technology in a chronograph that seems born for those who live every second as a race against time.
