In 1953 , Mount Everest still stood as the last unclimbed peak. For decades, it had repelled every attempt at conquest, faced with relentless storms, unpredictable avalanches, and air so thin it took the breath away from climbers.

But on May 29 , Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal accomplished the impossible. At first light, they set out on a final assault from their camp at nearly 8,500 meters above sea level .
