First introduced in 1969 , the Seiko Speedtimer represents a milestone in the history of innovation: it was the world's first automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch , features still used today in high-performance chronographs to ensure the utmost precision in measuring elapsed time.

Also in 1969 , Nissan Motor Corporation 's flagship sports brand was born: Datsun , destined to become an icon among Japanese sports cars. In 1971 , the Datsun 240Z , also known as the Fairlady Z – adorned with the Seiko logo as a sponsor – won the legendary East African Safari Rally , one of the toughest competitions in the world. The spirit of the Datsun 240Z reflects that of the Speedtimer: style , durability , reliability and high performance .

This Speedtimer watch incorporates several styling cues from the historic DATSUN 240Z rally car: the color scheme , the instrument-inspired font , and the DATSUN logo visible on the caseback , dial , and buckle . The hard-coated bezel features a tachymeter for speed measurement. Beneath the double-curved sapphire crystal , the subdials contrast with the black dial thanks to a different finish for excellent readability. The LWG-certified black leather strap adds a touch of elegance to the sporty design.

The model is powered by the in-house mechanical chronograph movement 8R48 , renowned for its extremely high precision. This caliber enables accurate measurement of elapsed time thanks to the combination of a vertical clutch and a column wheel , all housed in a 42mm diameter , 49.5mm lug-to-lug case. The 8R series movement was developed by Seiko to deliver the ultimate in precision and reliability, thanks to three key elements:

1. Vertical clutch – eliminates vibrations and jumps of the chronograph hand when starting/stopping, improving the accuracy and durability of the chronograph

2. Column wheel – with its shape reminiscent of the top of a tower, it ensures precise control of the chronograph functions

3. Three-pointed hammer – ensures that, upon pressing the reset button, all hands return instantly and perfectly synchronized to zero, increasing the durability of the movement
