The metal that antiquity did not know
Discovered along the rivers of South America, platinum was refractory to fire and difficult to work. The conquistadors called it platina, "little silver," unaware of its value. In 1557, Julius Caesar Scaliger, a physician and humanist active in the Venetian Republic, described it for the first time in Europe as an unknown metal, impossible to melt. For over a century, it remained a mystery, until metallurgical knowledge revealed its true value: one of the rarest and most resistant metals in the world.
Chemical and physical properties of platinum
Dense, ductile, incorruptible. Platinum is one of the most stable metals in nature: it resists oxidation, is unaffected by contact with air, water, or acids, and maintains its integrity even at high temperatures. It has one of the highest densities among the noble metals, making it visibly heavier and confirming its solidity. It does not discolor, does not warp, and can be worked in thin layers without compromising its structure. For this reason, it is used in complex fields, from aerospace technology to fine watchmaking, where precision and reliability are essential.
Tumbling and electroplating: our finishing process
Each dial begins with a brass base, which is subjected to a tumbling process to define its texture: a rippled, deliberately imperfect surface, unique for each piece. After careful polishing, the disc is immersed in an electrolytic solution containing platinum. The galvanic treatment creates a uniform and long-lasting layer, which deposits along the surface's irregularities and leaves its texture perceptible.
