Watch Water Resistance: What Does "Water Resistant" Really Mean?
When we read Water Resistant 30M, 50M, 100M or 200M on the case back of a watch, it's easy to think that number simply indicates the depth to which we can immerse the watch.
In reality, the matter is a bit more complex.
Water resistance is one of the most misunderstood features in horology, and understanding the meaning of the different indications can prevent one of the most common mistakes: thinking that a water-resistant watch is automatically suitable for a hot shower, bath, or sauna.
What do 30, 50, 100, or 200 meters really mean?
The international standard ISO 22810 establishes the requirements and test methods used to verify the water resistance of watches.
The number indicated on the watch therefore expresses a reference pressure, not a simple promise of use at that depth under any conditions.
A watch indicated as 30 meters or 3 BAR is essentially designed to withstand splashes and accidental contact with water. With 50 meters or 5 BAR, you enter the range of watches also suitable for swimming and, according to the indications of several manufacturers, for showering. At 100 meters, 200 meters, and beyond, resistance increases further, and you enter the territory of watches designed for more demanding water activities.
But there's a fundamental detail: water pressure is not the only factor that can challenge a watch's water resistance.
Why is it better to take off your watch during a hot shower?
This is where one of the biggest misconceptions arises.
If a watch is Water Resistant to 100 or 200 meters, why shouldn't it be worn in a hot shower?
The problem is not simply water.
Heat, steam, and temperature fluctuations can, over time, compromise the gaskets and elements that help keep the case watertight. Seiko and Grand Seiko expressly recommend not wearing the watch while bathing or in a sauna, explaining that steam, soap, and certain components in thermal waters can accelerate the deterioration of water resistance performance.
Casio also advises avoiding the use of watches in high-temperature and humidity environments, such as saunas and heated pools, because these conditions can reduce water resistance or cause fogging of the glass.
For this reason, it is important to distinguish between normal water exposure and a very hot, steamy shower.
Water can be perfectly compatible with the watch's water resistance rating, while heat and steam represent an additional stress factor.
What about the sauna?
Here the answer is even simpler: it's better to take off your watch.
Even a prominent dive watch rated for 200, 300, or more meters should not automatically be considered suitable for a sauna.
Grand Seiko itself recommends not wearing the watch in a sauna and highlights the possible negative effect of steam, soap, and thermal waters on water resistance performance.
It is important to understand, therefore, that 200 meters of water resistance does not mean “200 meters in any environment”.
A diver is designed and tested to withstand the water pressure expected for its specific use. A sauna, however, introduces another variable: very high temperatures, completely different from the conditions of a dive.
Naturally, there are exceptions: Casio, for example, has developed a specific watch designed for the sauna, with components and a battery engineered for temperatures up to 100 °C and for limited sessions. However, it is precisely this exception that proves the rule: a specific design is needed for the sauna; simply reading “Water Resistant” on the case back is not enough.
A watch's water resistance doesn't last forever
There's another often overlooked aspect.
A watch doesn't remain water resistant for its entire life simply because it was when it left the factory.
Gaskets can age, materials can deteriorate, and an impact can compromise the case's seal. Seiko emphasizes how water resistance can decrease with the aging of gaskets or as a result of deformations caused by accidental impacts.
For this reason, especially when a watch is frequently used in water, it's important to have its water resistance checked periodically according to the manufacturer's instructions.
And if the glass suddenly shows condensation or droplets inside, don't wait: it's a sign that warrants a check by assistance.
The simple guide to water resistance ratings
The most important rule, however, always remains the same: follow the specific instructions of your watch's manufacturer.
The most water-resistant watch is the one used correctly
Water resistance should not be seen as a race to the highest number.
A 200-meter watch is not necessarily "better" for daily use than a 50-meter one. It is simply designed to handle different conditions.
And above all, no number printed on the case back should be an invitation to take the watch everywhere.
Rain, splashes, and water can be perfectly compatible with a certain degree of resistance. Sauna, steam room, and hot shower, however, are situations where it's often smarter to do a very simple thing:
take the watch off your wrist.
Because in watchmaking, as is often the case, preventing costs much less than repairing.
